  She shook her head negatively.

  "Nothing much," returned Hurstwood. "It's quite a resort.There's some pretty scenery about here."

  Carrie listened most good-naturedly.

  "Is Mrs. Drouet in?"

  Her fancy plunged recklessly into privileges and amusements whichwould have been much more becoming had she been cradled a childof fortune. With ready will and quick mental selection shescattered her meagre four-fifty per week with a swift andgraceful hand. Indeed, as she sat in her rocking-chair theseseveral evenings before going to bed and looked out upon thepleasantly lighted street, this money cleared for its prospectivepossessor the way to every joy and every bauble which the heartof woman may desire. "I will have a fine time," she thought.

  "Frown a little more, Miss Madenda," said the stage manager.

  The gentleman looked him over and fished for a dime. Nothing butquarters were in his pocket.

  She bandied no more words with him, but hurried away, reachingher own door quite out of breath. There was something in theman's look which frightened her.

  "What have you done for me?" asked Carrie blazing, her headthrown back and her lips parted.

  He adjusted his paper very comfortably and continued. It was theone thing he read with absorbing interest.
  "There's lots of them on this line," said the officer on theright.Around the corner a more populated way appeared. One or twopedestrians were in view ahead. A boy coming out of a gate witha tin milk bucket gave Hurstwood his first objectionablegreeting.
  Now, as Carrie watched him out of the corner of her eye, certainsound thoughts came into her head. He had erred, true, but whathad she done? He was kindly and good-natured for all his egotism.Throughout this argument he had said nothing very harsh. On theother hand, there was Hurstwood--a greater deceiver than he. Hehad pretended all this affection, all this passion, and he waslying to her all the while. Oh, the perfidy of men! And she hadloved him. There could be nothing more in that quarter. Shewould see Hurstwood no more. She would write him and let himknow what she thought. Thereupon what would she do? Here werethese rooms. Here was Drouet, pleading for her to remain.Evidently things could go on here somewhat as before, if all werearranged. It would be better than the street, without a place tolay her head.…
